[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]Nedocromil is an asthma medication that possesses potent cromolyn-like anti-inflammatory properties. In asthmatics, it is able to prevent bronchospasm from allergic and non-allergic asthma triggers including sulfites, exercise and cold air.
When inhaled regularly, nedrocromil sodium also decreases bronchial hyperreactivity and improves lung function. It is highly effective in reducing asthmatic cough.
Brand Name
- Tilade (inhaler)
- Alocril (eye drop, opthalmic solution)
Drug Action
Nedocromil acts on mast cells and other inflammatory cells, inactivating them and preventing release of inflammatory mediators. It may also prevent activation of sensory nerve endings in the lining of the bronchial tubes helping reduce cough and reflex bronchospasm seen in asthma. Onset of action is as early as a few days though peak effects may not be seen for many weeks.
Side Effects
Transient unpleasant bitter taste is experienced by a minority of patients. No toxicities or drug interactions are known.
Available Forms
Nedocromil is currently available as a metered dose inhaler for asthma treatment and as an ophthalmic solution for allergic conjunctivitis.
When used as an inhaled anti-inflammatory agent for the preventive management of asthma, theĀ usual dose is 2 puffs (4 mg) four times daily although it is sometimes given at 4 puffs twice daily. After adequate control is achieved, it can often be tapered to 2 puffs twice daily.
Additional Comments
- When taste is a problem, improved inhaler technique and/or a good spacer will often help. A flavored drink, candy or mouthwash before and/or after inhalation can reduce the taste.
- Occasionally, in patients already on inhaled corticosteroids, the addition of Tilade may improve control of asthma symptoms.
- Tilade is not recommended for children under the age of 12.
